Assessment before a prescription
Acne treatment depends on the type and severity of breakouts, scarring risk and medical history. Bring your skincare routine, medicines and details of earlier prescriptions to the consultation.
Topical and oral treatment options
Options can include benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoids and selected oral medicines. Some patients need a combination. Antibiotic use should be limited and planned to reduce resistance; severe or resistant acne may warrant discussion of isotretinoin.
Adult and hormonal acne concerns
Mention any menstrual changes, relevant medicines, pregnancy plans or previous hormonal treatment. A search for hormonal acne treatment should lead to assessment rather than assuming that every adult breakout has the same cause.
Is this treatment right for me?
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, other medicines and previous side effects can change which treatments are suitable. Isotretinoin requires medical supervision and pregnancy precautions where applicable. Do not start or change prescription acne medicines from a website alone.
